Unity Labour Party (ULP) North Windward candidate Grace Walters issued a series of sharp accusations against the opposition New Democratic Party (NDP) during a rally in Georgetown on Saturday night, alleging that the NDP is preparing to “buy out the election” as the country approaches its next general vote.
Addressing a crowd of ULP supporters, Walters claimed that voters, including ULP supporters and transportation workers, may be targeted with financial inducements in the lead-up to election day.
She urged citizens to be vigilant and to document any behaviour they believe to be improper.
“If you see bribes happening, take out your phones and film. Turn on your voice recorder so they can have evidence,” Walters told the audience.
Walters added that, in her view, any such attempts would ultimately fail among loyal ULP supporters.
“Our drivers and workers are not stupid,” she said. “They will take their money and still vote ULP.”
Throughout her speech, Walters accused the NDP of distributing significant amounts of cash, alleging that the party is backed by “passport sellers and business persons.” She contrasted this with the ULP, asserting that the governing party “does not have that kind of money” or those types of connections.
Cliplet News notes that none of Walters’ allegations have been independently verified.
NDP officials have not yet publicly responded to the remarks, though the party has previously rejected similar accusations in past election cycles.
