Storm Gonsalves has revealed details of a troubling security incident at his family’s residence in Gorse, renewing public discussion about the level of protection afforded to former national leaders.
Speaking last week as a guest on Boom FM 106.9, Gonsalves recounted how a man, whom he described as mentally ill, gained access to the family’s property shortly after his father, former Prime Minister Ralph Gonsalves, had left the home accompanied by a single security officer.
According to Storm Gonsalves, the individual approached the gate, entered the yard, and made his way into the house while he was showering. By the time he had finished dressing, the intruder was already inside the kitchen.
He said the man arrived carrying a suitcase and reportedly told him that he had come to “move in with the Prime Minister.” Storm described the individual as mentally challenged and noted that the situation could have escalated dangerously under different circumstances.
Gonsalves explained that he keeps large dogs on the property, but at the time of the incident, his biggest dog was restrained. He said had the animal been loose, the intruder could have been seriously harmed.
The younger Gonsalves stated that the incident has reinforced his belief that his father’s current security arrangement is insufficient. He argued that beyond political affiliations, the safety of a former Prime Minister and current Opposition Leader is a matter of national interest.
“If something serious were to happen, it wouldn’t just affect one family—it could create instability for the entire country,” he warned.
The issue of security for Ralph Gonsalves has been raised publicly before. In early January, the former Prime Minister himself described his personal security situation as unresolved, stressing that his decades in office exposed him to sensitive information related to national security, intelligence, and confidential state matters.
He has argued that any responsible nation should ensure the protection of former leaders, not only for their personal safety but to guard against potential external pressure or coercion aimed at extracting classified information.
