Deputy Prime Minister St Clair Leacock has issued a pointed warning to Former Prime Minister and current Opposition Leader Ralph Gonsalves, cautioning him against participating in the upcoming budget debate in Parliament.
Speaking on the Boom 106.9 FM OMG show, Leacock was unequivocal when asked about the prospect of the former head of government taking the floor. “He had better not,” the minister said—repeating the warning for emphasis. He described such a move as “crazy” and suggested it would only invite what he termed a political “slam down.”
While indicating a general reluctance to discuss the former prime minister so as not to give him “relevance,” Leacock nonetheless addressed a series of concerns he said warranted public clarification.
Most notably, the Deputy Prime Minister alleged that he had received reports from senior public servants, including the Commissioner of Police, claiming that the former prime minister had been calling and “interfering” in their work. Leacock warned that such conduct compromises the independence and effectiveness of the police service.
“If that continues, there will be consequences,” he said, adding that the former leader must be told to “get off” matters that are not within his remit.
On the issue of security, Leacock confirmed that a security officer—who also serves as a driver—was assigned to the former prime minister. He dismissed complaints about inadequate protection, arguing that the former leader “can afford his own security” and was merely seeking excuses.
Leacock also downplayed the political weight of the former prime minister’s recent swearing-in as Opposition Leader, remarking that the opposition benches currently consist of “only one” member.
Turning to a broader critique, the deputy prime minister characterized the previous administration’s governing style as “isomorphic,” which he explained as a rigid “one way or the highway” approach. He likened the former leader to an “emperor with no clothes,” surrounded by individuals more focused on anticipating his wishes than offering honest advice.
