A Belair man who admitted to threatening the life of a Massy Stores employee while armed with a knife has been released on bond after appearing before the Serious Offences Court.

The accused, Akim Gaymes, appeared before Chief Magistrate Colin John on February 2, 2026, where he pleaded guilty to assault with intent to commit an offence, namely wounding. The charge stemmed from an incident that occurred on January 14, 2026, at Arnos Vale.

According to the facts presented in court, the complainant, Joanne Samuel of Belmont, is a Loss Prevention Officer employed at Massy Stores Arnos Vale. Her duties include conducting routine patrols and monitoring activity throughout the supermarket.

On the day in question, at approximately 5:16 p.m., Samuel was on duty when Gaymes allegedly confronted her inside the store. During the encounter, he reportedly pointed a knife in her direction and threatened to slash her throat and kill her. Gaymes later told the court that he was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the incident.

The matter was brought before the Serious Offences Court due to the nature of the threat and the use of a weapon. After considering the guilty plea and submissions made, Chief Magistrate John granted Gaymes bail, placing him on bond under conditions set by the court.

The case has raised renewed concerns about the safety of retail workers, particularly those tasked with loss prevention duties, who are often required to confront potentially dangerous situations as part of their job.

Further proceedings are expected as the court continues to address the matter.
