As public discussion continues following last Thursday’s general election, the Office of the Prime Minister has issued clarification regarding the promised VAT-free holiday, urging citizens to rely on accurate information about the legal process required to implement such a measure.

Prime Minister The Right Honourable Dr. Godwin Friday arrived at the Office of the Prime Minister for the first time today, marking his official assumption of duty. He toured the building, accompanied by the Commissioner of Police, and began the administrative transition following the change in government.

In recent days, some individuals have questioned the status of the VAT-free holiday promised during the election campaign. Government officials have emphasized that the delay is strictly procedural and not the result of a broken commitment.

According to the laws of St. Vincent and the Grenadines, no fiscal policy— including temporary tax exemptions — can be enacted until a Cabinet is formally sworn in. At present, no ministers, including the Minister of Finance, have taken the Oath of Office. As a result, the Government is not yet legally empowered to issue or gazette any order establishing the VAT-free period.

“The VAT-free holiday remains a commitment,” an official source noted. “However, the Constitution requires that ministers be sworn in before any such measure can be authorized. Today is the Prime Minister’s first day in office, and the formal appointments will follow in accordance with the law.”

The public is encouraged to await official announcements once the Cabinet is in place and the Ministry of Finance is operational. Government representatives stress that misinformation circulating online should not be mistaken for authoritative guidance, particularly regarding matters governed by constitutional and financial regulations.

The Office of the Prime Minister is expected to provide further updates as the transition continues.
