Ronnia Durham-Balcombe was officially appointed and sworn in today as Speaker of the House of Assembly, marking an important moment in the parliamentary affairs of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines.

Her appointment was confirmed during a formal sitting of the House, where Durham-Balcombe was presented to members and took the prescribed oaths of office in accordance with constitutional and parliamentary requirements. With the swearing-in completed, she now assumes responsibility for presiding over sittings of the House, maintaining order during debates, and ensuring that proceedings are conducted in strict adherence to the Constitution and Standing Orders.

As Speaker, Durham-Balcombe serves as the principal authority on parliamentary rules, procedure, and decorum—an office widely regarded as central to the effective and impartial functioning of the Legislature. The role also carries significant responsibility for protecting the rights of members and upholding democratic standards within the chamber.

The Office of the Speaker remains a cornerstone of democratic governance in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, particularly as Parliament continues deliberations on legislative reform, economic development initiatives, and key social policies. Durham-Balcombe’s appointment comes at a time when the House is preparing to advance several national priorities during the current parliamentary session.

Meanwhile, Jemalie John serves as Deputy Speaker of the House of Assembly. In that capacity, Senator John is responsible for presiding over proceedings in the absence of the Speaker or when she is otherwise unable to perform her duties.

During the sitting, Senator John also read the Declaration of Qualification and took the Oath of Allegiance along with the Oath for the Due Execution of Office, formally affirming his responsibilities under the Constitution.

Today’s proceedings underscore the continued emphasis on institutional continuity and parliamentary integrity as the House of Assembly carries out its legislative mandate.
